Soldier pile and lagging wall analysis – simplified method

For the soldier pile and lagging system shown in the figure below, determine the adequacy

of the HP14x89 soldier pile for the soil conditions shown. Determine the minimum depth

of penetration, required section modulus and timber lagging thickness. Use a safety factor

of 1.5 on the passive soil resistance. Assume the soldier pile is 50 ksi steel and has a

section modulus of 131 in3. The timber lagging has an allowable bending stress of 1,500

psi. Show all your work for each step.
