Write a research essay of about 1,500 words in length in which you construct an argument drawing on
one (or two) of the short stories we have read by Irving, Hawthorne, or Poe. Your thesis should be in some way related to your initial thinking about the following question: how does the writer exhibit
social responsibility? Your essay must draw upon a minimum of six sources, including at least one literary text and five secondary scholarly sources drawn from your library research.
