Ch. 2 Discussion Board “The Danger of a Single Story”

Please see the instructions to the discussion board below:

As we we move into our discussion on Culture and Diversity,  view this TEDtalk on the danger of a single story.
After viewing the video, post your thoughts or “take away” on the topic, and respond to two classmates. You cannot place “I agree”, “Yes”, “That’s right”, etc. in your replies. They must consist of between 3-5 full sentences for credit.

Week 2: Writing Assignment 1

For this assignment you must write three paragraphs. You can not use First person (I, me) or second person (you, we, or us)

1. Describe the speaker’s use of logos

2. Describe the speaker’s use of pathos

3. Describe the speaker’s use of ethos

Remember do not just go through the content point by point. I do not want you to simply retell what was said. Why did they ask Wiesel to speak? What was the significance of the speech?

Each paragraph must be 5-8 length. You must have at least one quote that is introduced and cited correctly. I am not requiring that you provide a works cited page for this assignment.  500 words minimum.

You must cite and introduce one quote per paragraph

You do not have to include a works  cited page.

If you do not make the length for these , you will not pass. You will also not pass the assignment if you do not have the required number of quotes. I will also grade for run-ons and fragments.

You may need to revisit last weeks’ module to view the speech again. Here is the text of  speech:

Citations should be the last name of the author followed by page number: (Jones 48).  If no page number was included in the source, then just the last name is sufficient.

NOTE: You cannot use the author’s name in the quote introduction if it is the only element to put in the citation

For example:

It is clear that he is a key part of the show:” I’m the host, yes. And I write all the music, and I write all the scripts”

(Rogers).

If you do have a page number, then you can use the author’s name in the citation:

Mr. Rogers uses logos in a manner which justifies his request for better funding. Rogers presents one example of his predicament with reasonable tone: “It may sound like quite a difference, but $6,000 pays for less than two minutes of cartoons” (4).

If you do not make the length for these , you will not pass. You will also not pass the assignment if you do not have the required number of quotes. I will also grade for run-ons and fragments.
