You must identify a topic in criminal justice and media for your Social Construction paper due in Week 7. Regardless of the format you choose, the content must be supported by valid academic research, and that research must be properly cited. In preparation for that assignment, you are to research three websites and two peer-reviewed journal articles or scholarly resources that deal with your chosen topic. One or more sources must be media-related.
Because the purpose of this assignment is to help you find credible sources for research, look for websites that are academic or based on professional aspects of criminal justice and/or the media. Many websites on the Internet are not credible or reliable sources for college purposes. Wikis, blogs, and other sites that focus on the personal opinion of the website creator are not acceptable.
This is a descriptive or informative assignment. You can find an excellent resource for annotated bibliographies at the Evans Library Research Paper Resource (Links to an external site.) page
Evaluate the resources based on the grading rubric. Examples on how to review a website are found in the Web Evaluation Criteria (Links to an external site.) by NMSU.
For information on locating peer-reviewed journals:
Parameters: The summary should be no more than five pages, double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font, one-inch margins. Use APA formatting.
You are expected to write primarily in your own voice, using paraphrase, summary, and synthesis techniques when integrating information from class and outside sources. Use an author’s exact words only when the language is especially vivid, unique, or needed for technical accuracy. Failure to do so may result in charges of academic dishonesty.
Overusing an author’s exact words, such as including block quotations to meet word counts, may lead your readers to conclude that you lack appropriate comprehension of the subject matter or that you are neither an original thinker nor a skillful writer.
Review the project rubric.
note from professor:
This is NOT a research paper so do NOT write it in paper format. An example is:
Buice, Ed (2007). Navigating the new media landscape: The more things change, the more they need to stay the same. The Police Chief 74,12. Retrieved from http://www.policechiefmagazine.org/magazine/index.cfm? (Links to an external site.)
This article is aimed at …
The focus of the article is…
I will use this material to support the following concept(s) in my paper/project…
Answering those questions well tells me you understand what you are looking for and helps you focus your research.
One last time: Next week’s paper is about the Social Construction of an issue, not the issue. If you chart your own course instead your grade will suffer. This happens every single term with someone. Break the pattern!!
