5-2 discussion: the role of communication in success

He states that “. . . the ability to communicate, the ability to think critically, the ability to work with teams, to see different worldviews, to have a sense of empathy for those who are not like you—these are the things that are going to make you successful not only in the workplace, but in life.”

Nearly everything we do as individuals relies on communication for success. This is amplified in school and throughout our growth as career-path professionals. In the online classroom and the professional workplace, communication relies heavily on writing skills. One’s ability to effectively express thoughts and ideas, or transfer knowledge from one party to the next, is an essential component of success.

This week, you will explore both your career and school paths through the creation of your academic mission statement. (Review the instructions in the Mission Statement Prompt document.) After reviewing the reading this week (Chapter 11) and the Final Project I Guidelines and Rubric document, work to address the following:

1. Share a time when you wrote or said something that was interpreted, or perceived, incorrectly by the recipient of your message. What do you feel might have caused your message to be interpreted incorrectly? Explain.

2. As you move forward in school and work, what strategies provided in the textbook (Chapter 11) might you leverage to ensure your communications are clear and accurately interpreted? Explain.

3. Finally, how important will communication be in your specific career path and in achieving your academic mission statement?

Respond to two of your peers. Work to expand the discussion by contributing unique, relevant content (personal/professional experiences or examples) or by expanding and adding depth to the thoughts and ideas shared by your peers (presenting different strategies in the book, or new ideas and thoughts, or similar personal/professional experiences to connect with). Per the rubric criteria, responses should be relevant and meaningful as they relate to the topics presented in the discussion.
